Growing talent is an all-around win—short term and long term—and it works best when we embrace Shared SuccessTM. That means organizations invest in the growth of their talent, through learning programs, internal promotions and stretch assignments. And individuals participate too – they take responsibility for their careers by looking for ways to increase their value.
Let’s talk about how to achieve greater Shared Success. If you’re watching the video, our two favorite GrowWise narrators, Danny and Robbie, explain it so well. (GrowWise is our virtual personal growth lab that makes it easy for leaders to grow talent and for individuals to empower themselves for a brighter future.)
What is Shared Success?
Shared Success is a way of thinking and working with both parties getting their needs met, realizing we’re all in this together. Individuals and organizations are interdependent. Growing your career is never a solo act. It’s always about building a partnership that benefits you, your boss, your colleagues and the organization by ensuring that all sides get their needs met. And to get there, step 1 is to think about what you offer today and how to grow your offer. Your offer is what you bring to your work, your talents, values, experiences, knowledge, education and so on. And then step 2 is aligning that offer with what you need and with what the organization needs from you. That’s how achieving Shared Success works.
It’s made up of 4 parts. When our individual needs are met, we’re happier and more productive employees. Organization needs are simply what the organization expects from its employees such as performance, engagement and leadership. Our individual offer is what you bring to your work. It’s important to always think about how to grow your offer. And the organization offer can be a variety of things, such as culture, leaders, teams and assignments. These are some of the things that make you feel like an organization and its culture are a fit for you. The process of aligning all four of these elements creates Shared Success.
So, Who’s Responsible for What?
When organizations embrace Shared Success, they take responsibility for building an environment that makes it possible for individuals to meet their own needs. They grow leaders to grow people and they encourage people to empower themselves in building their careers. As a result, the organization wins with greater engagement, productivity and results.
As an individual, to embrace Shared Success, you take responsibility for growing yourself – your own offer. The more you increase your capability, experience, soft skills and relationships, the more you grow your career opportunities.
How to Incorporate Shared Success
You can incorporate more Shared Success in your organization by:
- Focusing on learning to support people in growing their capability, i.e., their offer.
- Creating clarity so that expectations of your organization’s needs are clear and achievable.
- Promoting development planning so that everyone knows how they can best meet their own needs and the needs of the organization.
- Growing your leaders so that the culture is healthy and it’s easy to engage.
- Ensuring that everyone is capable of good, strong and healthy conversations. At the end of the day, Shared Success is negotiated and everyone must be able to navigate it for themselves.
