There’s a lot of talk these days about being authentic, but what does authenticity at work really mean? It means showing up with your whole, true self, practicing humility, and seeing other human beings just as they are. Easier said than done.
Many people show up at work with a persona, and that can build a wall in front of you that separates you from other people.
However, the truth is that showing up as your true, authentic self can help you do and achieve more. It increases your connection and your relatability with one another. But why do people hesitate to show up with all of who they are? It’s fear, of course. Fear of being vulnerable, looking bad and disappointing someone. Fear of being rejected. Next time you’re in a situation where you can bring your authentic self, don’t hide. Don’t let fear get to you and just bring all that you’ve got. Try sharing something new with a coworker that you haven’t shared about yourself and see what happens in that relationship!
